Weekend in Budapest

Weekend in Budapest

A weekend in Budapest

When you drive in Budapest, it immediately becomes evident that this is a metropolis, although the city is comfortable and spacious. We learned about the city almost nothing; it appeared on our way and we stopped here for a weekend. We are sharing our experience and pictures.

When you walk down the streets, you can see battle-tested facades of the buildings, and right next to them the restored or the new ones.

In the very city, we did not come across the new buildings that are taller than the old ones or stand out by their architecture. In general, buildings are four- or five-storeyed. Only in fairly remote areas of the city there are residential districts with skyscrapers.

Public transport does not speak about modernity of the city as trams and buses are mostly old. However, we enjoyed their taxis – all of them are yellow. This is cool to stick to a single color, bikes for rent are all light green, and trams are mostly yellow.

Subway.
This infrastructure is not well developed here, everything is old. However, people are trusted, because you have to validate your ticket on your own by coming to a small (orange) machine.

And here the main attractions for tourists begin. And a cool area with residential houses with views of the city and walkway with benches.

Personally, we are not interested when a monument or church was built, etc., that’s why we had fun in our own way)

West End mall with paid parking (6 forints per hour). Here are Starbaks, Vapiano, Mcdac and a lot more with crowds of people, because it is the only one, or one of a few located in the downtown.

Forints. We arrived in the evening and dropped to the supermarket to buy food, and prices are three-valued 🙂 Before the trip to Budapest we only booked the apartment, and we did not learn anything else, and certainly did not know about the currency and exchange rate.)) Therefore, we bought some food at our own risk spending 3000 forints, and, fortunately, 11 dollars were charged from the card… the rate here is 1 dollar/270 forints.

Sunday morning at 7 o’clock.

Throughout our stay in Hungary, we often met police patrol cars; they drive in the center all the time as well, perhaps therefore all drivers are polite and park properly. Although not all 🙂 On Sunday at 8 AM, we saw two men in uniform walking down the streets with a camera: if they notice an improperly parked car – they take pictures and give a ticket (they found at least one car – local). We failed to record this event.

This is a view from our balcony. Our car slept on the street as well.

Ceiling is about 4 m high, large windows, wood stove, but know they use gas heaters. Kitchen windows look out at the patio, and in the entrance hall – the old elevator with a key, which carries passengers only upstairs and always comes back on its own.

We had a little chat with Anders, who located us in the flat. He immediately asked about Ukraine. He said that Hungarians follow the news about Ukraine and support it, because they know what is USSR and present-day Russia, and know that IT does Everything. This dislike of Hungarians to the Russians comes from 1956 – a terrible revolution involving students and intellectuals. However, the Soviet army and that time communist regime (which came after the German Nazis) suppressed them.

Car wash. All Hungarians drive clean cars, they have a special self-service car washes. We also took advantage of it and had a lot of fun. There are four stages to select: 1 – detergent; 2 – just water; 3 – water with something (we omitted this step); 4- for shine. Each stage 100-200 forints (depending on the amount of liquid – we took 100 forints for each and it was sufficed for the car since it wasn’t very dirty).

And this is a village behind Budapest towards Croatia.

Siofok – a city near the famous Balaton Lake and areas with a number of houses for rent to tourists, as well as hotels and resorts.
hungary_44

We drove through many entrances to the lake until found an open entrance; almost all are closed (from hotels, resorts, private houses)
hungary_45

The lake is 77 km in length and 14 km in width.
hungary_47

Free motorway, we did not come across a paid one in Hungary.

Gas stations. If you buy fuel in the city, it is cheaper by 25-30 local kopecks than on the autobahn. Toilets are also paid at some gas stations – 100 forints or 50 Eurocents. If you want them for free, you should better stop on special highway stops.

Then we head to the Republika Hrvatska.
