Travel to amazing Cape Teno and Masca pirates’ village

Travel to amazing Cape Teno and Masca pirates’ villageWhat to see on Tenerife - Amazing Punto Teno

Besides Teide volcano, the most popular places are the Teno lighthouse in the west of the island and a remote village in the mountains on the serpentines’ way to the lighthouse. In fact there is a better place in the north but this will be in another article. We went here for the second time. The first time we came here with the photographer for our wedding photo shoot. We fell in love with the red lighthouse and views when we were in search of the right place yet at home, and have implemented our plans afterwards. Then we were stoked on those places, so wanted to return this time knowing that we will take cool shots) It was really so, we weren’t disappointed by these places! No wonder they’re so popular.

Over the newly built highway, namely through some parts of the tunnel, we quickly came to serpentines and went down to the famous pirates’ village.

In fact the main stop point is a little further and the village is quite big. And we, like the last time, stopped at the first most remote street with only one restaurant with terrace and wanted to enter but it was closed in the morning.

We walked around, looked at those places we were taken photos at and went a little further, where there’s a large parking site and descent to the main Masca. For some reason, we did not notice this last time and thought Masca is only a few houses and a restaurant. That’s okay because there’s less interesting there. Mainly restaurants, a museum, and fruits sellers.

A much prettier restaurant with a cool terrace and the view is located above Masca sideways to Teno.

We stopped on the beach before going up to the tunnel leading to Teno. Giant waves characteristic of the west and north of the island.

Pools are formed in the hardened lava and you can have a swim there, since the waves are dangerous.

There is a restaurant over the abyss and it looks as though the waves are going to demolish the institution, but its here for a long time, at least it seems so.

And we took delicious fish with rice along. We always cook for the journey and borrow pots from apartments.

The road to the lighthouse is very scary. It creeps like a thin strip along the mountain and sometimes through the very mountain in tunnels. High rocks constantly hang over the road and stones can fall down.

Down the road there’s high steep abyss.

Three years ago, there was a sign before the beginning of the road stating that the passage is dangerous and we’d better not go there. There was no sign this time, since the rocks were equipped with protective netting, and two rows of netting roof.

Desert land of windmills is visible on the other side of the tunnels. Constantly fighting sharp coast edges and waves.

maska teno-19

There’s a small beach near the lighthouse with a breakwater protection from waves.

maska teno-20

Apart from the lighthouse there’s an interesting mesmerizing place – coast on the right side, where the waves rise to impressive heights – they’re very strong.

maska teno-21

There’re no sandy beaches, just sharp hardened lava. The scenery has also changed in three years. One nice place with shiny smooth stones, where we took photos before, almost disappeared under the water, so we even didn’t approach it.

This place impresses and captivates like for the first time. It’s too high and too scary to look into the abyss underfoot.

Access to the lighthouse is closed by a high fence and the single point for everyone is the hill you can climb on, but it’s quite small. We got there first and had time to take pictures. Although newlyweds also came here with a photographer and we thought that this place would be occupied but the photographer came here for a moment, just made a shot and went away 🙂 He took more pictures of them in a different, less interesting place – we’ll take this as read.

However, there was another one with us who was sitting aside on a stone, a strange young man was playing games on the phone, and he was bored waiting for someone or for the very sunset.

And then they came) Crowds came out of the woodwork and we were lucky not to wait for later sunset and to begin earlier. Although shots with people appeared to be great as well.

maska teno-38 maska teno-39

As a rule everyone is taking photos from the left of the hill since it’s safe to climb there, and there’s the right side but it’s better not to go there, it’s very dangerous there for real. We did climb for a lot of people were to the left. You can easily slip into the abyss from the right, it’s due to very narrow path where you can lose your balance, especially when others are holding up the front or the back or a stone falls. We quickly got off from there, but others continued pushing there in a strange way.

Steep huge and high stones of lava and stormy waters below.

It’s strange, why they don’t open the lighthouse territory for everyone, or at least ennoble the two hills everybody’s climbing on.

This place is amazing, beautiful, and frightening at the same time. Another island of La Gomera, which we approached in a ship in a few days, is visible from here.
