Why you will fall in love with Split (Croatia)
Split is the second large city after Zagreb (the capital) with a population of 300 thousand people. Its old part is located on the shore of the Adriatic Sea, which is included in the UNESCO heritage.
Split has a long history, which can be traced back to the times of the Roman Empire. The Venetians, Austrians, Italians ruled here. Therefore, the old part resembles much of their architectural styles.
Split gained popularity among tourists not so long ago, some 5 years.
The Republic Square is reminiscent of Venice.
Cafes are crowded with people even during the non-tourist season. Once sunny, people solve all their business with a cup of coffee.
Ribarnica – a fish market in Split, which is open in the morning, since it manages to sell the night haul. A wide choice. Sardines for 10 kuna per kg are the major choice. They are very delicious when grilled; they are served in restaurants as an aperitif. We liked bukvica the most.
Promenade in Split. It’s very wide and can be divided into three zones: cafes by the walls of buildings, a wide street and oasis with palm trees and benches. Umbrellas in cafes are all the same, only a pedestrian zone, there is no beach.
We lived in such a house with a yard at the distance of a hundred steps from the promenade and Ribarnica. We bought fish almost every day and baked it with cherry.
Almost every person has a dog. There is a variety of them, but the most popular are of small breed.
Here is a view from the kitchen window on the tile roofs and mountains.

A new infrastructure was built near the promenade two years ago that occupies quite a long section. We liked this place most of all, we were jogging, resting, sunbathing and doing photo shoots here.
This is what we lack in Lviv. Although a local friend told us that the project was much better and more interesting. But it’s always all about money, if it’s not enough, everything is cut down. But we personally liked it. We haven’t seen the original project, but there was a lift to the Mount Marjan designed.
Space, minimalism, view of the sea and Marina. Three cafes, small petrol station for yachts, jogging and bicycle paths. And the loungers – the best part, they should have done more.)
And a hotel had to be behind – a large glass building, but the owner ran out of money and everything stands idle. In this general picture you can see – there is a long alley on the opposite side of the glass building – this is the new infrastructure.
Split Marina – a berth for boats, you can walk around the area and watch the yachts, you will feel a desire to sail on them or to have one too)
Another tip, which shows all Split – is Marjan park. A huge area on the hill, it takes approximately 1 km to drive through the tunnel to enter and leave the old part of Split.
Here we met wonderful people, a Pole who moved from Poland to the sea and set up his own café-shop with homemade ice cream and pastries and his friends. Indeed, everything’s very tasty. We spent a lot of time there during photo shoots and there always were a lot of buyers.
Local cuisine. Here almost every dish is served with Brussels sprouts for garnish or appetizer.
Be sure to try the grilled sardines. Local soup with beans and fish – very tasty. Meat dish – sheep for sure. And we baked fish at home every day. Croatian wine is also very tasty.
Some pictures of Split at night.
We have lived here for a month and we enjoyed it, all people are friendly, speak English. We stayed in the old part of Split, which overlooks the sea; there is a promenade, a piece of new infrastructure Marina with yachts, the sea. If you drive away, you encounter the usual areas – neighborhoods with Yugoslav buildings; there are no newly built yet, well at least with shopping malls and new buses. Meanwhile, we sailed on the ferry to the island Brac – we will explore Croatia further (Republika Hrvatska).
With love, RH.
