Wonderful trip to the Cofete beach
Fuerteventura is the 5th island in our Canary Islands’ study. Having arrived here from La Palma you get immersed in totally different environment than on the previous islands. If there are relic or pine forests and various green parks on the previous ones, Fuerteventura has no saturated green colors. There are bare mountains, sandy deserts, sand and sand once again – i.e. gray, golden, and purple colors.
Fuerteventura is famous for its strong winds, very long beaches and is the most popular spot for sports fans having to do with the wind: windsurfing, kitesurfing, etc. Even the island’s name comes from words “wind” and “strong”. It’s the second largest island after Tenerife. But there is less population here because most of the island is covered with deserts. And the rain is out of question since there are no high mountains that would catch clouds.
But why is it worth going here? Due to the most beautiful and longest beaches of all the Canary Islands. For example, the length of Sotavento Beach is 30 km.
We arrived onto Fuerteventura from La Palma by local carrier Binter, with one transfer on Tenerife, as there’re no direct flights. Just having 2 hours for everything and 140 € for two: easy, convenient and enjoying chocolates from the company. You could choose another way – by ship, but it’s uneconomic and time-consuming since there’s no direct junction: you need to sail again to Tenerife but heading southwards, then get to the north overland and from there sail to Fuerteventura for several uneasy hours. And considering our predisposition to seasickness, we opted for the plane. Details about transport and traveling between the islands here.
So, Fuerteventura. This island is one of the two coolest islands among all the Canary Islands according to our version. Just look through the photos and see for yourself.
The island is 100 km long and 30 km wide. Comfortable roads, highways are being constructed and at some distances you can drive at 120 km/h.
We went to explore the southern part first. The longest beaches and most popular resorts are located here, on Jandia Peninsula. It’s so cool here that we have a lot of material, so we’ll divide it into two articles. We’ll show the most southern point in this article: Cofete beach and the town near the Jandia lighthouse.
Having arrived to the resort town of Morro del Jable and one of the major ports where tourists come to and with nothing interesting apart from hotels and restaurants, we just drove further. We faced unsurfaced road and drove the long way between small mountains and deserts up to the crossroads where we turned to the lighthouse first.
Nothing around but blank mountains, sky, road, and ocean landscapes.
We try to learn something, or rather hear ourselves, our ideas, from each place, let alone the impressive ones. We are being changed in such conditions.
We experience freedom in such vast spaces. However trite it may sound but you can sense you wings here.
Plunging into another world, experiencing another land, nature, and life. Comprehending.
Little by little we got to the only settlement within the 30 km radius located near the lighthouse. Wind, soil, rocks, and salt water around. And the sun without even a hint at shadow.
It’s perfect feeling of freedom.
It was one of the most fruitful days for shooting; we were taking pictures all the day!
Currently, such house on wheels is more appropriate for older people and not for us, we believe. And when we are ten to twenty years older – then why not.
Then we walked through this town – solid white houses or trailers – they are probably to be rented in summer.
There are no asphalt roads; we saw no open windows or doors. Only one or two bars indicate that someone lives here. Houses are like shelter from the sun and wind – little dark comfort, it seems.
Here we saw everything and went back to the crossroads to turn to the most surprising beach and space.
Along the way you can call in some small beaches but the roads there are more suited to off-roaders; local fishermen go fishing there and enjoy their privacy with the sun. As usual, we are on Opel, the 5th for all the rentals. More about car rental on the Canary Islands here.
This most southern part of Fuerteventura is basically almost wild; no one constructs anything here, while the resorts emerge right next to it. But who knows what will happen in a few years, perhaps even the winds won’t hinder setting up new resorts and artificial beaches.
There’re almost no beaches next to the lighthouse but when we crossed the chain and got to the other side we were startled with the bodacity.
Incredible scene! Seeing it for real it’s nothing to compare to.
This is Cofete beach – wild, suited for brave surfers. Unrealistic winds.
Constantly. Always noisy. But how beautiful!
As if someone dabbled in the sand and made up mountains, watered them and the rivers went down to the ocean. Then this “someone” shoveled through the mountains making the road. And now we’re driving it along by car.
This is the coolest and most spacious beach!
The wind is so strong on the observation deck at the top that it almost blows us out of feet.
The name of “Cofete” beach calls up the association with coffee, especially looking out at coffee colors everywhere.
It’s quite a long trip going down to the beach, especially if you stop for taking dozens of shots.
Outside the car window you see the wild space, unusual land and coffee colors.
We got to mini-civilization to drink our magic drink – barraquitos – Canary coffee with condensed milk, liqueur, lemon, and cinnamon.
Restaurant on the beach – a small and the only eatery for tourists who sit here for hours ) As always, it’s loud, noisy, shoddy, smoking allowed. We had our sugar dose and went quickly on.
All cars are left quite far away from the water, there’s no other way to drive closer due to fences. Probably the waves are high at times.
Just ants and millions of traces, which haven’t yet been washed away by waves.
Incredible! There’s indescribable atmosphere here, you just derive pleasure. Albeit the strong wind, loud noise, and cold water.
Adrenaline rolls over; you’re scampering through the space, running away from the waves, jumping. Time stops here, you become another person.
We started taking photos. Meanwhile we left our belongings far away aiming at their protection from the long waves, and ran to and from now and then to wear a jacket to warm up a bit.
We were continuously moving for two hours or so to the sound of waves and strong wind.
When you get used to staying in peace and quiet, without any wind or noise, then you start being quickly wearied of natural phenomena, the very wind and ocean noise. You won’t manage to keep up with these for long. But that two hours’ adrenaline lasts for long, and it doesn’t matter you hoarsen or suffer headache. Soon you’ll be back to the silence and usual peace. But memories will remain and emotions as well!
This is the place you exactly should pay visit to!
But there is one more thing related to Cofete beach. This is a mountain offering fantastic look over the beach. The mountains’ contours are so marvelous; they are for sure on the beauty rank top covering all our journeys.
There is no observation deck and this place is out of the island sightseeing list. But it’s certainly the most beautiful place.
The ocean looks so tranquil, and waves create delicate filigree by their pattern when viewed from here. And the haze from the water and mountains’ ideal shapes. Everything is so aesthetically pleasing and magical.
Just this one spot is worth attending Fuerteventura. This landscapes charm, mesmerize, and make a mash on you.
Sandy and coffee paradise.
We adore bathing in sunlight.
Ocean waves’ filigree ….. Splendid! It so nice here that you can simply sit on the hill contemplating; and let the whole world wait.
If you take a closer look, you can see Tenerife’s contours.
Everyone has already left and we traced the sun over to the horizon, now let someone else see the sunrise on the other half-globe.
