Trip to the desert Jable: Sotavento beach and cute squirrels

Trip to the desert Jable: Sotavento beach and cute squirrelsMust see on Fuerteventura -Where to find squirrels

Canary island Fuerteventura is impressive. Though it’s the second largest after Tenerife, but it’s home to the smallest number of people from all the islands since most of the territory is unsuitable for life – sandy deserts and mountains. Here is the lowest rainfall and constant lack of water. But each year the Canarians create more facilities and venues for tourists. And yet we still managed to visit the wild expanses of the oldest island. And to feed amiable and lazy squirrels!

In the first part about the south of Fuerteventura we demonstrated Cofete beach and southern lighthouse. And now we’ll tell about Jable desert, Sotavento and La Pared beaches where squirrels live.

fuerteventura playa Cofete and Sotavento

Jable desert is quite large, all roads are ground. It’s preferably to drive in a jeep, but the majority goes by ordinary passenger cars, like we do. Sometimes the roads are such that the only achievable speed is 5 km/h. Not a soul and nothing at all around. You need to have food, water and a full tank of fuel with you.

The main roads are laid far away from the edge and you have look for subtle paths to drive closer.

fue-40

There are some points where surfers stick together and they surf only in certain places here.

fue-41   fue-44 fue-45 fue-46

Descent to this beach is only in one place by narrow steps.

fue-47 fue-48 fue-49

Hardened lava.

fue-50 fue-51 fue-52 fue-53

It’s difficult to call this place a beach; perhaps there are times when the ocean rises up to the rocks and the sand is constantly wet.

fue-54

After the beach we went up the rock and then finally met those whom it’s forbidden to feed! The squirrels!!!

fue-55

They are very cute, almost unafraid of people, fast and glutton.

fue-56 fue-57

One German showed us how to feed them and even gave two nuts for us to feed them.

fue-58

We have met them only on this island. There are certain places where these squirrels are found and they know people will feed them – that’s no way out, they’re so cute creatures))

fue-59

If you firmly hold a nut in your hand you can raise the squirrel, it will be trying with full strength to pick the nut by its teeth and even push into the hand by its legs))

fue-60 fue-61

They’re running around, about five of them were nearby.

fue-62

We had no nuts since had no time to buy them in the supermarket. But one of them much liked our boiled rice. We made sure that everyone eats rice, even crows.

fue-63

Such mimimi. The squirrel didn’t leave until all the rice was eaten.

fue-64 fue-65

And this squirrel smiles) It’s obvious on the big photo

fue-66 fue-67 fue-68

If you lie down and put the food on yourself, the squirrel won’t be afraid to climb on you, the purpose is to eat anything. Just stones on the top are so sharp that sitting for long let alone lying down won’t go)) It’s forbidden to feed the squirrels since they become lazy and don’t eat their usual food, they simply don’t try to find it. They also can put on some weight because they have no sense of proportion and simply eat, eat, and eat. We hope they won’t take up much weight due to our rice)

fue-69

Mimimi dose received and we went a little further in the desert. It’s a little scary to approach the edges. They look like sand but they can get crumbled, although indeed it’s very hard rock.

fue-70

Basically the whole Jable desert edge is high and it as though is crumbling of the wind and water over time. So we weren’t eager to go further since it’s very difficult to crawl speeding 5 km/h on low-profile tires, moreover the sun was getting lower and lower, and it’s not a pleasant thing to stay there in the dark not seeing the road)

fue-71 fue-72

The small point is our parked car, there is some sort of road at least but it’s possible to reach the edge by feet only.

fue-73 fue-74 fue-75

Fuerteventura is wild and free, almost unbroken by people for now.

fue-76 fue-77 fue-78

The only sign of the civilization in the desert is wind station.

fue-79

We hardly managed to leave the desert. We drove for long along with a fence lengthwise the highway until we found our way out. And the lighthouse is located in the of Morro de Jable resort, where the road from the city to the beach runs through long desert.

fue-80 fue-81

The most popular, longest beach of all the Canary Islands – Sotavento beach which stretches for 30 km.

fue-82

The entire beach is dotted with surfers, kitesurfers and other sports associated with the wind. The wind here is strong and constant. Summer sports championships are spent here, on the Sotavento beach.

fue-83  fue-85 fue-86 fue-87

Mailboxes near the main road, and there recipients aren’t detected within the several kilometers’ radius.

fue-88

Sotavento beach is unrealistically large and spacious. You need to overcome considerable distance from the parking site to the water. There is nothing but observation towers for rescuers. Constant wind, it’s cold here. Just lovers of such sports who come here. It won’t do just lie sunbathing, even due to the sand almost everywhere being constantly wet.

Paradise for certain people and difficult conditions for the rest.

fue-102   fue-105 fue-106 fue-107 fue-108 fue-109 fue-110 fue-111

The scale is impressive. But the Cofete beach has gained our heart more!
