Romania deserves gratitude for maintaining its historical wealth and developing tourism around it. One of the most interesting tourist sites is decrepit and huge, ever abandoned salt mine. Salina Turda Mine is found to be the most beautiful underground town in the world. Yes, the town, since the scale is impressive. And it’s one of the most famous salt mines, which attracts millions of tourists. We couldn’t miss this both space and underground wonder. And the prices are just pennyworth compared to the salt mines in other countries.

This salt mine was abandoned yet in 1932. It had bundles of applications: as a bomb shelter during the war and as a cheese storage warehouse :). Only recently the Romanians implemented interesting project here: salt mining museum, entertainment complex with remedial features inside, and everything made up in the cosmic design.

The salt mine is about 100 m deep with constant temperature of 12 degrees. It is valuable information for highly allergic persons – there are no microbes and allergens due to unique environment. So, first you need to go down a long tunnel into salt corridors.

Pointers lead to the main room – the town. Such a huge room of 80 m long, 50 m wide and 40 m high. And there are people-ants down there. You can also become the same, getting down by the elevator by 40 m. And imagine for a moment that all this volume was filled with salt, which was mined hundreds of years ago here by hands and hammers.

Though the elevator is glassy, the glass is all stained by hands and noses. A whale of entertainment ahead at temperature of 12 degrees and remedial air for lungs.

There are stairs are at both ends of the cave in addition to the elevator. But it’s next to impossible to use them. First – they are very steep and narrow, and second – salt sediments onto all surfaces and makes them slippery.

Underground entertainment park at a depth of 100 m, isn’t it cool? There is an observation wheel, an amphitheater, golf, table tennis, bowling, and souvenirs.

turta salt-8 All entertainment is very cheap: USD 1.5-2.5. We really wanted to get to the observation wheel, but it was out of operation for some reason. Bowling was occupied with a few people in queue, so just golf was left. And we were lucky to come in the evening when all major crowds have already gone.turta salt-9

Salina Turda mine map. Vertical section on the top shows the rooms’ depth. And below is the scheme. Rooms open for visitors are marked yellow, and those closed are brown.

Lower cave with a lake 8 m deep is the most interesting and stunning place. It’s spine-chilling. Designers have made alien design of the amusement.

The depth is huge. An island of pavilions for breathing treatments and a pier with boats in the middle. You can swim for USD 2.5. But it’s for those not scary, because you will be in deep black abyss with a giant hole above.

No wonder this place is so popular and brought fame to Romania – it’s really an extraterrestrial unique place.

You go down into this cave in a closed elevator. But beforehand you can look at it from above, as there’s a window-hole from main large gallery in this cave.

And the helicopter that is so true here.

Fans of horror will like this. In general, there are a few more rooms – museum pieces – but they are not as impressive, though, everyone has them on the route.
