One of the most interesting places to visit in Romania is mud volcanoes in the national reserve located 145 km from Bucharest. Beyond the Berca village, near the Buzau city.

Mud Volcanoes are little volcanoes being formed from mud and erupting because of the strong underground gas pressure. Basically it is clay with the addition of oil, water, etc. There are four rather large areas next to each other in Romania.

We visited one of them. The entrance to the area is chargeable and cost us 4 lei. It is important to know that you won’t be allowed to the area during the rain and just after it. The guards say: if traces are left on the ground, it’s unsafe to be there. We arrived just after the rain and, fortunately, entered after having waited for an hour for the sun to parch the land a little. Because you need to pass a few dozens of meters from the cash desk to see the most interesting.

While we were waiting for an hour we walked around the area sidewise, where none could see us)) Clay quickly and firmly clings to the feet and shoes.

When the land is completely dry, it is covered with dried clay cracks. Then there’s even more spectacular view.

After the rain it’s really very slippery here, so to be on the safe side, do not come close to the very volcanoes, because they are the wettest places there.

Volcanoes are small, some are higher than man’s height. The rest are small, but with a wide crater, and you can see how gases are coming up and bubbles are being formed. Mud doesn’t splatter or splash but slowly deflates.

At the exit you can see visitors scraping their feet against asphalt and grass trying even a little to remove the solid clay from the shoes. Kind people put a big barrel of water and give even shoe brush to clean. But this helps only a little bit, you really need to spend very long time and apply all possible means to be clean. This is when the land is wet. And we were not let in barefooted being told there is radiation…

The place is nice, the scale is not very impressive but it’s interesting to look at those little volcanoes.

By the way, there are also mud volcanoes, but on a smaller area in Ukraine.
