5 reasons to visit Gran Canaria (Canary Islands)5 reasons to choose Gran Canaria this summer (Canary Islands)

Gran Canaria is the second island by popularity. There’re no space landscapes as on Lanzarote or Fuerteventura. But there remained the largest number of old beautiful towns dissimilar from each other. There’s a beautiful and striking desert, incredible mountains and beaches.

1) THE GREAT DESERT MASPALOMAS

Maspalomas desert is perhaps the best known spot on Gran Canaria. People come from everywhere to look at it and walk along its high dunes. It’s better to get acquainted with it in the morning, preferably at sunrise. Wander among the sand and dunes, get lost in its vast expanse and listen to the ocean breeze nearby. See more here

2) INCREDIBLE MOUNTAINS OF GRAN CANARIA

There’re no fresh volcanoes craters on Gran Canaria. There are high green mountains and rocks.

The most interesting route through the mountains lies in the middle of the island starting from Maspalomas town. Heading along the serpentine road you can reach up to incredible observation decks and walk to the best known stone Roque Nublo that’s 90 m high. Or go closer to the island’s west and drive through fantastically narrow roads along water basins, ascend to the highest points and enjoy the views of the beautiful mountains. See more here

3) COZY BAY AND BEAUTIFUL CACTUSES AND FRUIT GARDEN

There’s a small but cozy and picturesque bay, so calm and harmonious, in the west of Gran Canaria. It’s located near the quiet town of La aldea de San Nicolas with bananas and other crops growing around in the valleys. And on the way you can come across a marvelous garden of cactuses and fruit. You hardly find such diversity elsewhere. It’s so beautiful and exciting here! See more here

4) VARIOUS BEAUTIFUL CITIES AND TOWNS OF GRAN CANARIA

If you go to the north of Gran Canaria, you’ll find there the largest cluster of old lovely towns that don’t resemble each other. For example, the town of San Felipe and El Roque Street with houses located on the rock with windows and balconies overlooking the ocean. Walk along tiny streets and go to the only restaurant with a magnificent terrace with waves fighting below.

Santa Maria De Guia is the town with colonial buildings, such romantic and beautiful that you can look at them for ages.6

Galdar town being built from the bottom to the middle of the high mountain, where the houses are decorated with lovely tiles.

7

Agaete city located at the end of the main highway. This city stands out strongly from the others by its white houses with green mountains on the background.

8

You can feel as if in France by going to Arucas with a Gothic cathedral in the city center. You should take your time in a cozy cafe which windows overlook such a beautiful architecture. See more here

Three more interesting old towns are in the south-east of the island. Aguimes is one of them. It has so many monuments in its streets that you can easily lose their count.

Following a narrow street you can accidentally stumble upon a camel, or a stone dog. This city is also unique owing to the houses with interesting facades being decorated with stones of different shapes. There’re are two more the like towns nearby – Ingenio and Telde. See more here

It’s this island having the majority of unique towns, which are interesting to explore.
